What is an Otoplasty?

An otoplasty or “ear pinning” is a simple cosmetic procedure in which very prominent ears can be affixed at a flatter position in which they will appear smaller and be less intrusive. This simple procedure can help patients to feel more confident and assured without feeling the need to hide their ears. This procedure can be performed on children and adults alike with long-lasting results.

How is an Otoplasty Performed?

If you feel that your ears stick out too much for your liking, Dr. Berman can pin your ears to a flatter position. He does this by removing the excess tissue or cartilage that exists behind the ear causing them to stick out. He will make an incision behind the ear to remove any necessary tissue leaving a rather inconspicuous scar that will heal over time. This procedure takes less than two hours and can be done with local anesthesia.

How Long is Recovery?

Depending on how extensive your procedure will be, Dr. Berman will discuss with you ahead of time what you should expect for your specific circumstance. After the procedure, you will have bandages wrapped around your ears that you will need to leave in place until your follow-up appointment, where the bandages are typically changed.

Most often, patients are released the same day and can return to most normal activities after one week. During this week it is important to get plenty of rest while also making walking a priority to keep blood moving. Your ears will be sensitive for several days post-surgery so it’s important to keep them protected. After two weeks, you will have almost fully recovered and can enjoy the results for a long time.
