What Is Laser Hair Removal?

Laser hair removal is the long-term reduction of unwanted body hair. At our practice, we use the Palomar Icon by Cynosure with the Max-R attachment for hair removal. With a built-in melanin reader, this machine can detect your melanin levels to accurately diagnose your skin tone, so the doctor can apply the appropriate level of the laser to get the best results.

Laser Hair Removal Overview

Who Is a Candidate for Laser Hair Removal?

Good candidates are those who wish to eliminate excess body hair that causes self-consciousness. Those who are looking for an alternative to other hair removal techniques, such as waxing, electrolysis, shaving, or bleaching, may also be able to benefit.

While those with light skin and dark hair tend to see the best results, the Palomar Icon machine can work in multiple settings to address a variety of skin tones and hair colorings. A consultation with Dr. Berman can help to determine which treatment option is right for you.

How Is Laser Hair Removal Performed?

While some patients may feel slight discomfort during laser treatment, a topical anesthetic can be applied beforehand. During treatment, the Palomar Icon handpiece will be applied to treatment areas. The highly concentrated light will penetrate the hair follicles. Light is then absorbed by the pigment in the hair shaft, damaging future hair growth. While laser hair removal can help to slow hair growth, it does not guarantee permanent hair removal.

Treatment time can take anywhere from 15 to 45 minutes, depending on the size of the treatment area. Most patients will require a series of 3-5 hair removal treatments to provide optimal results.

Recovery and Results

Following treatment, patients will experience smoother skin. Laser hair removal requires no downtime, so patients can feel free to return to everyday activities. Minor redness may occur in the treatment areas, though this should resolve quickly. Sunscreen must be worn on treated areas to ensure optimal outcomes.
