What Are Dark Under-Eye Circles?

Dark circles can cause many individuals to look tired or sad, and they can be caused by a range of factors. These include hyperpigmentation or inflammation that affects blood vessels under the eyes. Hyperpigmentation under the eyes can be caused by:

  • Blood- deposited hemosiderin
  • Melanin- true dark pigment from melanocytes
  • Allergic “shiners”
  • Blepharochalasis
  • Genetics
  • Lack of Sleep
  • Nasal Congestion

Allergic “shiners” are caused by Inflammation that expands the tiny blood vessels under the eyes. Factors that can cause inflammation include:

  • Food Allergies
  • Milk/casein
  • Wheat/gluten
  • Seasonal Allergies
  • Hay fever
  • Cosmetics
  • Allergens from home or workplace

Dark Circle Treatments Overview

What Are the Treatment Options?

The first step towards treating your dark circles is to schedule a physical exam with both Dr. Berman and our aesthetician. Every individual is different, especially with this issue, so Dr. Berman likes to see the patient determine the best course of action.

The cause of your dark circles dictates treatment. There are many treatment options available, including IPL, hydroquinone, ThermiSmooth, Fractionated CO2, blepharoplasty, fillers like Belotero, Juvederm, Volbella, fat grafting, or coverup cosmetics.

Hydroquinone

Hydroquinone is prescribed for short-term (2-3 weeks). While hydroquinone can lighten pigmented areas of the skin, it may not help under the eyes because the cause of the dark circles may not be skin pigmentation. Side effects of using hydroquinone include drying out of the skin, redness, itching, and irritation. It is strongly advised that anyone using hydroquinone avoid overexposure to UV light, whether artificial or not. A follow-up appointment in 2-3 weeks is needed for re-evaluation. Eyelid skin is very thin and needs proper care.

 Skin Tightening Procedures

There are also skin-tightening procedures that can help to minimize the appearance of dark circles. These include:

ThermiSmooth

A non-invasive treatment that uses temperature-controlled radiofrequency energy to shrink collagen, smoothing the skin.

Fractionated CO2

A minimally invasive treatment that targets limited areas of the outermost layer of skin, stimulating collagen production for a more youthful appearance.

Blepharoplasty

A surgical option that is done to improve the appearance of the eyelids, but can also address fatty deposits under the eyes, bags under the eyes, or dark circles.

Fat Grafting

A surgical option that uses the patient’s own fat to fill in voids or depressions.

Fillers

Fillers are another option to address dark circles. At our office, we use blunt cannulas rather than needles to ensure a more even distribution of the product. Minimally invasive fillers such as Belotero, Juvederm Ultra, Volbella, Restylane, and Refyne are used to “plump up” the depressions in the tear troughs and decrease depressions in the lower lids.

Eye Creams or Coverup Cosmetics

For patients who do not wish to undergo a procedure to address their undereye circles, eye creams or cover-up cosmetics can do the trick. We offer professional, dermatologist-approved products such as Obagi, Truffoire, and Skinceuticals.
