The first step towards treating your dark circles is to schedule a physical exam with both Dr. Berman and our aesthetician. Every individual is different, especially with this issue, so Dr. Berman like to see the patient determine the best course of action. The patients need proper facial photographs as well as VISIA computer facial analysis.
The cause of your dark circles dictates treatment. There are many treatment options available, including IPL, hydroquinone, ThermiSmooth, Fractionated CO2, blepharoplasty, fillers like Belotero, Juvederm, Volbella, fat grafting, or coverup cosmetics.
Hydroquinone is prescribed short-term (2-3 weeks). While hydroquinone can lighten pigmented areas of the skin, it may not help under the eyes because the cause of the dark circles may not be caused by skin pigmentation. Side effects of using hydroquinone include drying out of the skin, redness, itching, and irritation. It is strongly advised that anyone using hydroquinone avoid overexposure to UV light, whether artificial or not. A follow-up appointment in 2-3 weeks is needed for re-evaluation. Eyelid skin is very thin and needs proper care.
There are also skin tightening procedures that can help to minimize the appearance of dark circles. These include:
A noninvasive treatment that uses temperature-controlled radiofrequency energy to shrink collagen, smoothing the skin.
A minimally invasive treatment that targets limited areas of the outermost layer of skin, stimulating collagen production for a more youthful appearance.
A surgical option that is done to improve the appearance of the eyelids, but can also address fatty deposits under the eyes, bags under the eyes, or dark circles.
A surgical option that uses the patient’s own fat to fill in voids or depressions.
Fillers are another option to address dark circles. At our office, we use blunt cannulas rather than needles to assure a more even distribution of the product. Minimally invasive fillers such as Belotero, Juvederm Ultra, Volbella, Restylane, and Refyne are used to “plump up” the depressions in the tear troughs and decrease depressions in the lower lids.
For patients who do not wish to undergo a procedure to address their undereye circles, eye creams or coverup cosmetics can do the trick. We offer professional, dermatologist-approved products such as Obagi, Truffoire, and Skinceuticals.
