Uncover youthful, radiant skin
Fine lines, wrinkles, and hyperpigmentation are some of the earliest signs of aging. A loss of collagen combined with time in the sun can weaken your skin and lead to damaged skin cells. With a CO2 laser treatment, the outer layers are removed and your collagen production is stimulated to product stronger, younger-looking skin.
Did you know that the word “laser” is an acronym? It stands for Light Amplification by the Stimulated Emission of Radiation. Although first discovered by Einstein in 1927, it wasn’t until the 1980’s that lasers were developed to treat wrinkles. The first CO2 lasers used what’s called a continuous wave mode, which means that the light waves were focused continuously on each section of skin. When skin is damaged with laser beams, the skin’s cells go into “recovery mode,” which increases the production of collagen and elastin, two of the building blocks of young skin. The end result? Fewer wrinkles and firmer, more luminous skin. Although CO2 lasering became known as the “Gold Standard” in laser skin rejuvenation due to its phenomenal results, those results came with a cost: an oozing, crusting facial appearance that required about a month of recovery time. The development of fractional CO2 lasers has been a boon for patients who want improved skin quality with a faster recovery. In other words, fractional lasers deliver great results in a fraction of the time!
I 100% recommend Dr. Berman and his highly qualified staff for all of your cosmetic needs. I had 4 laser treatments done on the upper part of my thighs for stretch mark removal, and after the 2nd treatment I couldn’t believe they were almost entirely gone!
-Real Patient Review
South Florida plastic surgery patients are delighted to discover that Dr. Berman has invested in the SmartSkin CO2™ laser for the following concerns:
- Wrinkles on the face, neck or hands
- Loose skin
- Dull, uneven skin
- Large pores
- Dark circles beneath the eyes
- Age and sun spots
- Scars from acne or trauma
- Keratoses (tiny raised bumps on the skin)
The SmartSkin™ laser is an ablative laser, which means it literally ablates (removes) the top layer of your skin. However, it differs from traditional CO2 lasering by exposing limited areas of skin and splitting the laser light into tiny beams. Because less skin is “damaged” by each pass of the laser, recovery time is much more rapid than with a traditional CO2 laser treatment.
South Florida plastic surgery patients who opt for the SmartSkin™ laser appreciate the fact that the average treatment takes only 20-30 minutes, although Dr. Berman will customize your treatment based on your goals, so your treatment could take up to an hour. Before treatment, Dr. Berman will apply an anesthetic cream to numb your skin, which is washed off just before the laser treatment. Both you and Dr. Berman will wear special glasses to protect your eyes. Most patients describe the feeling of a SmartSkin™ Fractional CO2 laser treatment as fairly comfortable due to the numbing cream and the use of a cooling wand during treatment.
Since fractional CO2 treatments are usually repeated in a series, they can be customized to provide a quick peel of 3 days, a moderate peel of 5 days, or a deeper peel of 7 days. The more aggressive the treatment, the more redness and swelling you will experience afterwards. After treatment, your skin will look as though you have a sunburn and you will have some swelling as well. A single, less aggressive treatment followed by another several weeks later is generally preferred over one deeper laser treatment.
