Achieve a better proportioned and more appealing figure with breast augmentation.

Are you interested in breast augmentation in Boca Raton? Breast augmentation is an elective cosmetic surgery procedure performed in Dr. Jonathan Berman’s in-office surgical suite under general anesthesia to enhance the size, shape, and symmetry of your breasts.

What is Breast Augmentation Surgery?

Breast augmentation surgery is a procedure to increase or restore the size of the breasts using silicone gel implants or saline implants. It is one of the most popular plastic surgery procedures performed to date and has a long and successful track record in helping women restore balance to their figures. Many women experience changes in their breasts due to weight loss, pregnancy, breast cancer, or aging, and a breast augmentation can restore a more youthful and symmetrical breast appearance for a boost in confidence.

Breast Augmentation Guide

Choosing the right breast implant involves more than just picking a cup size. Implant type, profile, and size work together to determine how your results will look on your body, including how full the breasts appear and how far they project forward.

Breast Implant Options

There are numerous breast implant choices, including saline and silicone implants. More specifically, there are shaped implants (sometimes called “Gummy Bear” implants); gel-filled (once called “silicone implants”); and saline implants:

  • Gummy bear implants: A popular choice in breast augmentation because they are made from a highly cohesive silicone gel that helps the implant maintain its shape, even if the outer silicone shell is compromised. These shaped implants offer excellent breast volume and soft tissue support, making them ideal for women with thin breast tissue or those undergoing breast reconstruction surgery.
  • Silicone breast implants: Silicone breast implants remain one of the most widely chosen options in breast augmentation surgery due to their natural feel and realistic look within the breast tissue. Filled with smooth, viscous silicone gel, these silicone gel breast implants closely mimic the density of natural fat tissue and are often recommended by board-certified plastic surgeons for women seeking a softer, more seamless result.
  • Saline breast implants: Saline breast implants are filled with sterile saltwater and offer a customizable option during breast implant surgery because the volume can be adjusted at the time of implant insertion. These saline implants provide a firmer feel and are placed through a smaller incision, making them appealing for women who prefer a smaller scar or want to avoid silicone gel entirely.

Implant Profiles

Implant profile refers to how much the implant projects outward from the chest relative to its base width.

  • Low profile implants have a wider base with subtle projection, creating a softer, more natural slope.
  • Moderate profile implants balance width and projection and are a common choice for natural-looking fullness.
  • High and extra-high profile implants have a narrower base with more forward projection, which can create a fuller, more lifted appearance, especially for patients with a smaller chest width.

Implant Sizing

Implant size is measured in cubic centimeters (cc), not cup size. The right size depends on your chest width, existing breast tissue, body frame, and aesthetic goals. Two patients can choose the same cc implant and have very different results based on their anatomy.

The best way to determine the right implants for your body is by scheduling a private consultation with our team.

Choices in Breast Implant Incision Locations

There are three primary choices for the incision used in breast augmentation procedures. An incision can be placed:

  • Beneath the breast in the crease where the breast meets the chest wall (called the inframammary fold)
  • The underarm area
  • Around the areola

Although each woman’s anatomy is different from another’s, the choice of incision is most influenced by the size and type of implant as well as the incision that appeals to you the most. Dr. Berman will discuss your incision options during your consultation appointment.

A Caveat About Axillary Breast Implant Placement

Depending upon your age, you may wish to avoid an underarm (axillary) implant placement. While today’s breast implants are extremely sturdy, it’s logical that most women will wish to replace their implants after 10-20 years or if they experience capsular contracture or breast implant rupture. For this reason, Dr. Berman advises women under the age of 40 to avoid an axillary incision for their breast augmentation because, if and when the implants are removed and replaced, the underarm incision cannot be used again. Therefore, replacing the implants would result in two scars: under the arm and under the breast. While the scars do fade with time and Dr. Berman’s suturing technique creates as little scar tissue as possible, if you’re at an age that replacement may happen in your future, placing the incision in the inframammary fold or around the areola may be a better choice for you. Dr. Berman will discuss your incision options with you in great detail during your breast augmentation consultation.

Who Should Undergo Breast Augmentation Procedures?

Healthy adult women with realistic expectations are good candidates for breast augmentation. By that, we mean that one cannot expect to go from a 32A bra size to a 38DD breast size with one augmentation. It’s our goal at Berman Plastic Surgery and Spa that each breast augmentation patient’s results look both beautiful and natural as if her breasts were never augmented. If your goal is to have very large breasts and you have a very short and/or thin frame, it’s not impossible to “go large.” However, it may require more than one surgical procedure. Some women need a Breast Lift with Breast Augmentation.

Aging, childbearing, breastfeeding, and genetics play their parts in terms of breast sagging. Some women have always had sagging breasts, while others experience this phenomenon after bearing and nursing children. There are specific measurements that Dr. Berman will perform in your cosmetic surgery consultation to identify whether or not your results would be improved by having a breast lift with your breast augmentation. It is never Dr. Berman’s goal to convince you to have an additional procedure if you be satisfied both with your experience and with your results.

How is the Breast Enlargement Surgical Procedure Performed?

All cosmetic surgery procedures are performed in the accredited ambulatory surgical facility in our Boca Raton plastic surgery suite. The American Academy of Ambulatory Surgical Facilities certifies our operating room. Dr. Berman has handpicked the most experienced surgical scrub techs and surgical and recovery room nurses to assist him, to assure the safest experience possible. He utilizes the services of board certified anesthesiologists, rather than opting for anesthesia nurses. Dr. Berman has over 30 years of experience, and our patients are as safe here as in a hospital operating room, while they avoid exposure to hospital-based bacteria. Additionally, they enjoy a much more personalized experience. This level of experience is hard to find with our combined 60 years’ experience in in-office ambulatory surgery. We have a 0-infection rate.

After marking the breast implant patient, general anesthesia is instituted by a board certified anesthesiologist. Incisions are then made in the area that you and Dr. Berman agreed upon during your consultation. A “pocket” is created, usually under the breast muscle, to house the breast implant, after which the implant is inserted. The breasts are closely and meticulously evaluated to be certain that both breasts look as identical as possible (almost every woman’s breasts are slightly asymmetrical), and when satisfied that the best result has been achieved, the incisions are closed with absorbable sutures and a dressing is applied. As an outpatient procedure, a special surgical bra is then put on the patient and she is transferred to the recovery area, where she will remain for a couple hours or until she is feeling ready to go home to recover.

Goal

Enhance the size, shape, and symmetry of the breasts, restoring balance to the figure and creating a natural, aesthetically pleasing result.

The Procedure

Performed in our accredited in-office surgical suite, breast augmentation involves creating a pocket beneath the breast tissue or muscle to place a breast implant. Implant types include silicone gel, saline, and highly cohesive “Gummy Bear” implants, each offering different benefits in terms of feel, projection, and shape. Implant profiles (low, moderate, high) and incision locations (inframammary, periareolar, or axillary) are selected based on your anatomy, goals, and long-term considerations.

Anesthesia

Performed under general anesthesia by a board-certified anesthesiologist to ensure patient safety and comfort throughout the procedure.

Length Of Time

The procedure generally takes 1 to 2 hours, depending on implant type, size, and placement.

After Procedure

Following surgery, patients wear a supportive surgical bra or garment to protect the implants and assist healing. Initial swelling, bruising, and sensitivity are normal and usually improve within a few weeks. Pain is manageable with prescribed medication.

Recovery

Most patients can return to work within a few days to a week, depending on activity level. Full recovery and optimal results may take several weeks, with swelling gradually subsiding. Long-term results provide a natural, balanced breast appearance, and following post-operative instructions carefully helps ensure the best outcome.

Breast Augmentation Results and Recovery

Following breast augmentation, patients will be placed in a support bra or garment that will help to support their new breast contours. Breasts may feel tight and sensitive, and swelling and bruising may initially occur, which will dissipate over time. Pain medications can help with any discomfort or breast pain that occurs. You should be able to walk without help after surgery, and it is important that you get up to walk every few hours to reduce the risk of blood clots. Many patients can return to work after a few days to a week, depending on the nature of the job.

It is important that patients refrain from lifting, pulling, or pushing, and minimize excessive physical activity for the first couple of weeks to ensure optimal results. Dr. Berman also discusses rare concerns such as breast implant illness with patients so they feel fully informed and confident throughout their breast augmentation recovery. Following Dr. Berman’s post-op instructions is important for a smooth recovery period.al results. Frequently Asked Questions about Breast Augmentation

How long do breast implants last?

The longevity of breast implants differs for everyone. On average, most implants last between 10-15 years, at which point patients can have them removed or replaced.

How do I prepare for breast implants?

Prior to your surgery, you will have a Pre-Op appointment with your surgeon and they will inform what is needed prior to surgery.

What is the difference between saline and silicone implants?

Saline and silicone implants both enhance breast volume, but they differ in how they feel and how they are filled. Saline implants are filled with sterile saline after placement, while silicone implants are pre-filled with a cohesive gel. Many patients prefer silicone for its more natural look and feel, though both options are safe, FDA-approved, and effective depending on your goals and anatomy.

How long is recovery after breast augmentation?

Most patients experience an initial recovery period of about one week, during which swelling, tightness, and mild discomfort are common as the body adjusts. Many return to desk work within 5–7 days, while more physically demanding jobs may require additional time. Light walking is encouraged early on, but strenuous exercise, heavy lifting, and chest workouts should be avoided for 4–6 weeks or until cleared by Dr. Berman.

Will breast implants affect breastfeeding?

In most cases, breast implants do not interfere with the ability to breastfeed. Many patients successfully breastfeed after augmentation, especially when implants are placed under the muscle and incisions are made in the inframammary fold (beneath the breast).

What is capsular contracture?

Capsular contracture is a possible complication of breast augmentation in which the scar tissue that naturally forms around the implant becomes unusually firm or tight. It is treatable, and most cases can be successfully managed with revision surgery, implant replacement, or capsulotomy to restore a softer, more natural shape.

Can breast augmentation be combined with a breast lift?

Yes, many patients choose to combine breast augmentation with a breast lift to achieve both increased volume and improved breast shape. A breast lift elevates sagging tissue, repositions the nipple, and restores a firmer contour, while implants enhance fullness and projection. Pairing the two procedures is especially beneficial for women with both volume loss and noticeable sagging, often due to aging, pregnancy, or weight changes.

How does implant profile influence the final breast shape beyond size alone?

Implant profile affects forward projection and fullness, playing a major role in whether results appear more subtle or more pronounced.

Why can two patients with the same implant size look completely different?

Chest width, rib cage shape, skin elasticity, and existing breast tissue all influence how an implant appears after placement.

How does implant placement affect long-term aesthetics?

Whether implants are placed above or below the muscle can influence upper pole fullness, implant visibility, and how the breasts change with time.

Can breast augmentation improve asymmetry without making it obvious?

Careful adjustments in implant size, pocket positioning, or surgical technique can improve asymmetry while maintaining a natural appearance.

How do lifestyle factors like fitness or weight changes affect implants?

Significant weight fluctuations or intense chest workouts can alter breast appearance, which is why surgical planning takes long-term lifestyle into account.

What are the risks and potential complications of breast augmentation?

Breast augmentation, like any surgical procedure, carries certain risks and potential complications. Common risks include infection, bleeding, adverse reaction to anesthesia, and changes in nipple or breast sensation. While complications are uncommon when performed by a qualified surgeon, it's essential to discuss all risks thoroughly during your consultation and follow all pre- and post-operative instructions to minimize potential issues.

How much does breast augmentation typically cost?

The cost of breast augmentation varies significantly depending on several factors. Saline implants are generally less expensive than silicone implants. Additional costs may include pre-operative medical clearance, prescription medications, and potentially revision surgeries if needed in the future. Our practice offers financing options to help make the procedure more accessible.

Will I lose nipple sensation after breast augmentation?

Changes in nipple sensation are a common concern after breast augmentation, and while some temporary alteration is normal, permanent changes are less common. Most patients experience some degree of temporary numbness, tingling, or hypersensitivity in the nipple and breast area during the healing process, which typically resolves within a few weeks to several months.

What is the difference between submuscular and subglandular implant placement?

Submuscular (or subpectoral) placement positions the breast implant partially or fully beneath the pectoralis major chest muscle, while subglandular placement positions the implant above the muscle but beneath the breast tissue. The choice between the two depends on factors such as your body type and the amount of existing breast tissue; Dr. Berman will help determine which approach best suits your individual anatomy and desired outcome.

How soon can I return to work and exercise after surgery?

Most patients can return to desk jobs or light work within 3-7 days after surgery, though you may still experience soreness and need to avoid heavy lifting or strenuous arm movements. For jobs requiring physical labor or heavy lifting, you'll typically need to wait 2-4 weeks before returning. As for exercise, light walking is encouraged almost immediately to promote circulation and prevent blood clots, but you should avoid upper body exercises, heavy lifting, and high-impact activities for at least 4-6 weeks.

What happens if an implant ruptures?

If a saline implant ruptures, the sterile saltwater solution is safely absorbed by your body, and the affected breast will noticeably deflate over a few hours or days, making the rupture immediately obvious. If a silicone rupture is detected, the implant should be removed and replaced if desired, though this is typically not a medical emergency with modern silicone gel implants. While implant rupture is a possibility, modern implants are much more durable than earlier generations, and manufacturers often provide warranties that cover rupture within certain timeframes.

Can I choose my exact breast size, or does anatomy play a role?

While you certainly have input into your final breast size, your natural anatomy plays a crucial role in determining what sizes are possible and what will look proportionate and natural on your body. Factors that influence appropriate implant selection include your chest wall dimensions, the amount and quality of your existing breast tissue, skin elasticity, body frame, height, weight, and shoulder width.

Will my implants need to be replaced eventually?

Breast implants are not considered lifetime devices; although they don't have a specific expiration date, they may need to be replaced at some point. The average lifespan of breast implants is typically 10-20 years, though some last longer and others may need replacement sooner due to complications.

How visible will my scars be, and where are incisions typically made?

Scarring is an inevitable result of breast augmentation surgery, but skilled surgeons place incisions strategically to minimize visibility, and most scars fade significantly over time. The four main incision locations are: inframammary (in the crease under the breast), periareolar (around the edge of the areola), transaxillary (in the armpit), and transumbilical (through the belly button, though this is less common).

What should I look for when choosing a plastic surgeon?

Look for a board-certified surgeon who specializes in breast procedures and performs breast augmentations regularly, as experience directly correlates with better outcomes and lower complication rates. During your consultation, evaluate how comfortable you feel with the surgeon, whether they listen to your goals, provide realistic expectations, explain risks thoroughly, and demonstrate genuine interest in your well-being.
