Non-Surgical Facelift: Is it Right for You?

Feel more youthful and radiant with non-surgical facelift options from Dr. Berman

It’s no secret – as we mature, our facial skin begins to lose its youthful appearance and the fullness it once had. If you desire to achieve a younger, more refreshed appearance but do not want a surgical facelift, there is good news – many other non-surgical facelift options are available! Some patients decline to undergo a traditional facelift because it is a surgical procedure that can require a substantial recovery period, while others do not like the idea of surgery altogether. For these patients, Boca Raton plastic surgeon Dr. Berman recommends getting a “mini-facelift” through laser resurfacing or injectable fillers.

Would laser resurfacing be right for you?

Laser resurfacing allows patients to obtain more youthful radiance in their faces without undergoing any nips or tucks. Although this treatment is not as effective or long-lasting as a surgical facelift, laser resurfacing is known for improving the appearance of wrinkles, reducing fine lines, and correcting certain skin conditions. Surgical facelifts alter the structure of one’s face, whereas a face-lift with laser resurfacing improves the appearance of one’s face through a “heat and heal” cycle. In this cycle, the production of collagen and elastin is actually stimulated, helping skin look younger and feel firmer. It is typical for patients to see their skin continue to improve for several months after having this treatment.

For patients with large pores, vertical wrinkles that appear above the lip – also known as “smoker’s lines – and/or wrinkling and sagging around the jawline and neck, laser resurfacing is recommended over other facelift interventions. After a patient’s face has completely peeled following treatment, they will be left with a smooth and glowing appearance.

Laser resurfacing is generally a fast procedure though recovery time varies depending on the type of laser used. Ablative lasers work by burning off the outermost layer of the skin and a portion of its sublayer. Treatment typically takes one or two sessions, with recovery time being anywhere from a week to ten days or until peeling has finished.

Non-ablative lasers heat the skin but do not burn off tissue. Treatment can last several sessions but recovery time is almost immediate, with most patients resuming their normal daily activities right away.

Are injectable fillers right for you?

Mini-facelifts with fillers are another great way to achieve youthful, quick results without surgery and a lengthy recovery time. When receiving treatment with dermal fillers, most patients only experience redness, tenderness, and some slight bruising but resume daily life immediately. With several dermal fillers available, it is important to speak to a trained plastic surgeon such as Dr. Berman to learn more about each filler’s limitations and benefits.

Sculptra actually works by correcting the cause of wrinkles. It is an FDA-approved made with poly-L-lactic acid that stimulates the body’s production of collagen. This dermal filler can help you replace lost facial volume and achieve a more natural, younger-looking appearance. In most cases, three injections are given over a few months and results can last several years.

Juvederm is made of Hyaluronic Acid, which naturally occurs in our skin but diminishes in volume as we mature. It is offered in various formula types that can help with facial reshaping, and reduce lines on the forehead, cheek jawline, and lip areas. Some patients even use Juvederm for wrinkles on their hands. It can last anywhere from 18 – 24 months.

Restylane is a non-animal-based gel that not only fills in wrinkles but can add lubrication and moisture back to the skin. This filler can smooth wrinkles, shape facial contours, and also be used for lip augmentation. Results in lips can last up to six months, and up to nine months in other areas.
