How Erbium Laser Skin Rejuvenation Works
The Cynosure laser 1540 handpiece is a non-ablative laser treatment that’s specifically designed to gently treat the above problems with a rapid recovery time. What’s the difference between ablative and non-ablative laser treatments? I’m glad you asked!
Ablative vs. Non-Ablative Laser Treatments
All types of laser skin rejuvenation are based upon a “heat and heal” cycle. When the skin is heated by the laser energy, your body increases its production of collagen as a way to heal the treated area(s) of skin. As you may know, collagen, a plentiful ingredient in young skin, diminishes in production as we age. Through this “heat and heal” cycle, new collagen creates younger, smoother and clearer skin.
An ablative laser removes (ablates) the top layer of skin and some of the sub-layer through pulsed microbeams of laser energy directed into the dermis. Although a longer recovery time is part of an ablative laser treatment, the results can be so dramatic that a single treatment can provide satisfactory results. An example of an ablative laser is our SmartSkin™ CO2 laser.
A non-ablative laser heats the targeted tissues without removing (ablating) them. A non-ablative laser treatment has minimal to no downtime but the trade-off is likely to be a need for more than one treatment. For patients with extremely busy schedules, a non-ablative laser treatment may be the better choice between the two.
Depending upon your skin’s condition and your personal goals for laser skin rejuvenation, Dr. Berman may use both the Fractional CO2 laser (ablative) and the Erbium:Yag laser (non-ablative) to obtain the best results.
Treatment with Our Erbium Laser
We will apply a cream anesthetic to your skin before your Erbium laser treatment at our plastic surgery practice in Boca Raton to numb the skin and make your treatment more pleasant. After approximately 30-45 minutes, the cream is rinsed away. While undergoing your Erbium laser treatment, you will wear goggles to protect your eyes. AN Erbium laser treatment varies between 30 and 60 minutes or longer, depending upon the number of areas you wish to have treated. Thanks to the combination of numbing cream and a special cooling handpiece, discomfort during an Erbium laser treatment is minimal.
Recovery from an Erbium Laser Treatment
One of the benefits of an Erbium laser treatment is that, depending on the number of “passes” of the laser over your skin, our patient often return to their day’s activities immediately. Those who undergo repeated passes of the laser, however, can expect a sunburned appearance that requires topical lubricants for a period of a week to 10 days during which the skin will peel. Many of our Erbium laser patients find, however, that makeup can satisfactorily disguise all but the most aggressive peeling.
