What Is the Erbium Non-Ablative Laser?

The Cynosure 1540 handpiece is a non-ablative laser treatment specifically designed to gently address the above problems with a rapid recovery time. All types of laser skin rejuvenation are based upon a “heat and heal” cycle. When the skin is heated by laser energy, your body increases collagen production to help heal the treated area(s). Collagen, a plentiful ingredient in young skin, diminishes in production as we age.

Through this “heat and heal” cycle, new collagen creates younger, smoother, and clearer skin. An ablative laser removes (ablates) the top layer of skin and some of the sub-layer through pulsed microbeams of laser energy directed into the dermis. Although a longer recovery time is part of ablative laser treatment, the results can be so dramatic that a single treatment can provide satisfactory results. Depending upon your skin’s condition and your personal goals for laser skin rejuvenation, Dr. Berman may use both the Fractional CO2 laser (ablative) and the Erbium:Yag laser (non-ablative) to obtain the best results.

A non-ablative laser heats the targeted tissues without removing (ablating) them. Non-ablative laser treatment has minimal to no downtime, but the trade-off is likely to be a need for more than one treatment. For patients with extremely busy schedules, non-ablative laser treatment may be the better choice between the two.

How is Treatment with the Erbium Non-Ablative Laser Performed?
