How Long Does Chin Augmentation Last?

Chin augmentation aims to achieve facial balance by enhancing the size or projection of the chin. This process can aid in achieving a proportionate facial appearance, promoting balance and symmetry.

When considering chin augmentation, ensure that you have an experienced surgeon doing your procedure. As a double-board-certified plastic surgeon with thirty years of experience, Dr. Berman can give you the profile you’ve always wanted.

How Does Chin Augmentation Work?

Chin augmentation, also known as augmentation mentoplasty or genioplasty, is a surgical procedure designed to enhance the shape and size of the chin.

Implants

If you require an implant to achieve your desired chin shape, the procedure can be performed under general anesthesia or with local anesthesia combined with sedation. An incision is made either inside the mouth or beneath the chin. A pocket is created in front of the chin bone, and the implant is carefully inserted.

These implants can be made of various materials, including silicone, Teflon, Dacron, or biological inserts. The implant is often secured to the bone with stitches or screws, and sutures are used to close the incision. When the incision is inside the mouth, scarring is minimal and barely visible.

Bone Reshaping

In some cases, Dr. Berman may need to reposition the jaw bones. This procedure is typically performed under general anesthesia. An incision is made inside the mouth along the lower gum, allowing access to the chin bone. Using specialized tools, Dr. Berman will carefully make a second cut through the jaw bone and then move and secure it into the desired position with metal plates, screws, or wiring. The incision inside the mouth ensures that there are no visible scars.

Chin augmentation surgery typically lasts between 1 and 3 hours. It is sometimes performed with other cosmetic procedures, such as rhinoplasty (nose surgery) or liposuction.

Risks, Recovery, and Results

While chin augmentation is generally safe, some risks are associated with the procedure. Common complications include bruising, implant movement, and swelling.

Following the procedure, you may experience some discomfort and soreness. Numbness in the chin area may persist for up to 3 months, with a stretching sensation around the chin for about a week. Swelling typically subsides within six weeks after the procedure.

You may be required to follow a liquid or soft diet for a day or two after the procedure, and you may need to wear a brace while sleeping for 4 to 6 weeks. Light activity can be resumed a day or two after surgery, with a return to work and usual activities expected within 7 to 10 days.

Whether you have a chin implant or the jaw bones are reshaped, the procedure is permanent, so the results typically last a lifetime.
