5 Things to Know About Eyelid Lift Recovery
One of the best options available for rejuvenating the eyes with long-term results is the eyelid lift. As with most surgeries, post-op recovery is a process– and an important one. At Berman Plastic Surgery & Spa, our double-board-certified plastic surgeon can create the ideal eye rejuvenation procedure for you using our best options. When planning your blepharoplasty, it can be helpful to know what to expect afterward. Here are a few things to keep in mind as you prepare.
Prepare for Swelling
After virtually any surgery, you can count on some swelling. With eyelid surgery, there can be some extra effects with this. Pressure around the eyes can cause your vision to be slightly blurred for a few days after surgery and there can be some bruising and discoloration as well. A cold pack applied to the eyes for about twenty minutes at a time can provide relief and decrease swelling. Focusing on blinking will soothe the eye and help decrease dryness as well. Eyedrops can be helpful in relieving dryness and itching, so you’ll receive instructions on which kind to look for.
Rest
As with any surgery, you’ll need plenty of rest to allow your body to heal. Make sure that you can have assistance as needed for a few days after your surgery. Avoid any stressful or vigorous activities that could irritate the surgical site by sweating. Getting your blood moving too much can also exacerbate your swelling. Another important process is to make sure to keep your head elevated when sleeping or resting to reduce swelling and complications.
Rest Your Eyes
Along with resting your body, it’s also very important to rest your eyes. Try to avoid activities that involve high focus or straining, such as watching television, looking at a computer or smartphone, and reading. Your vision will most likely be blurry for a short time after surgery so these activities may be difficult anyways. Instead, look into calming activities that don’t require much visual acuity such as meditating or listening to your favorite podcast or radio station. Audiobooks are also a great way to keep you in tune with your favorite novel. It can be helpful to wear sunglasses during your immediate recovery since your eyes may become photosensitive.
Adjust Your Routine
When recovering from your surgery you may notice that you aren’t able to do some of your daily activities as easily. Preparing to change your routine will make your life a little easier. Avoiding sleeping on your sides or stomach is important to prevent irritation and keeping pets off the bed is important as well. Baths are also recommended over showers to prevent possible irritation. It can be helpful to prepare meals and snacks ahead of time so you don’t have to worry about cooking during your recovery.
Be Careful With Makeup
It can be tempting to reach for your makeup to cover up bruising and discoloration after your procedure, but it’s important to wait. Dr. Berman will give you a detailed timeline of when to return to your normal makeup routine, so make sure to avoid any irritating products while you give your body time to heal.
