The 411 on Laser Hair Removal

If you have been thinking about laser hair removal but are still unsure of the process, read on for a quick guide to the treatment process. For many, as soon as they realize that there is a need for multiple treatments, laser hair removal loses its appeal. Something to note is that there are a few cosmetic treatments that can be completed in one go. Treatments that involve a series typically yield big results and are done this way for your safety.

To prepare for the procedure, you want to stop all waxing, epilating, or hair removal that involves the removal of the follicle. The reason for this is that it is vital that you leave the follicle intact for the laser to zero in on. Even though you need to leave the follicle intact, it does not mean that you want to let the hair grow out like you would for waxing. If you are not freshly shaved, you run the risk of laser-burning hair. Long story short, shave before your treatment for the best results.

The laser treatment itself may cause slight discomfort, but this will subside shortly after treatment. During treatment, the laser’s headpiece will be applied to the skin, and the light energy is absorbed by the pigment in the hair follicle. This light energy that is absorbed gradually destroys the follicle’s ability to grow. As mentioned before, this can take a few treatments to fully take effect. After a series of treatments patients can expect a much slower rate of hair growth or no growth for many years.

After each treatment, there is little downtime required of the patient. Some patients may experience some minor redness in the treated areas but that will most likely fade within a day or so. Since the skin may be relatively sensitive, you will want to pay extra attention to protect it from the sun. Applying sunscreen or covering the treated areas with light layers of clothing will help prevent any accelerated sunburns.
