Open vs Closed Rhinoplasty

Almost everyone is familiar with the term “rhinoplasty”, or “nose surgery.” This procedure can improve the shape, angle, and size of the nose, as well as correct structural problems that restrict breathing and cause congestion. This procedure can have a significant impact on an individual’s self-image and self-confidence, which is why it is a popular cosmetic procedure today. Read on to learn more about this procedure, and how it is done.

Rhinoplasty Basics

Individuals often choose to undergo rhinoplasty surgery if they are unhappy with the shape, size, or angle of their nose, or if their nose is too large, too small, or not in proportion with the rest of their face. Individuals may also choose to undergo this procedure if they have breathing problems resulting from irregularities inside the nose. Because rhinoplasty surgery is a delicate procedure, there are two main techniques used to achieve it: the open and closed techniques.

Open and Closed Techniques

Open rhinoplasty requires the creation of an incision across the columella or the strip of tissue between the nostrils. Other incisions are also created inside the nose. This technique offers great visualization of the nasal structures and a direct route for surgical manipulation. While this procedure may result in a scar, it will fade with time.

During a closed rhinoplasty, all incisions are made inside of the nasal passages. Because these incisions are hidden, they are invisible after the procedure. This procedure offers excellent visualization of nasal structures and eliminates the visible scar.

The procedure technique that is right for you can be determined during your consultation.
