Understand these Keywords to Shop Smart

These days, natural and organic products are all the rage. Consumers are told that these products are better than others, offering all-natural results. However, it is important to understand the true meaning behind these keywords when buying beauty products. Read on to learn what the meaning of popular buzzwords is so you can make educated purchasing choices.

“Natural”- When a product is labeled as “natural” that does not necessarily mean that all of its ingredients are pure, as the FDA has not defined this term. To get a feel for what’s actually in a product, read the ingredients on the side of the product. If you can’t pronounce them, they are most likely chemicals, and should probably be avoided for those with sensitive skin.

“Organic”- The USDA defines the term “organic” as products containing agricultural ingredients that have met organic production standards. A product must be labeled “100% organic” or “organic” to carry the USDA Organic seal.

“Vegan”- The term “vegan” indicates that a product has not been tested on animals and contains no animal products. If a product is labeled as “cruelty-free” it means that there has been absolutely no animal testing done. You can be sure that a product is vegan or cruelty-free if it has a seal from the Vegan Awareness Foundation, Leaping Bunny, or PETA’s Beauty without Bunnies program.

“Gluten-Free”- While food products labeled “gluten-free” are regulated by the FDA, cosmetics are not. However, most people do not need to worry about gluten-free beauty products, unless you are gluten-sensitive and want to be extra cautious. Those who wish to avoid gluten-laden products should avoid products with wheat, rye, or barley on their ingredient list.
