New Study Shows Round and Shaped Implants are Indistinguishable
When it comes to breast implants, most Boca Raton patients are aware that they come in two forms: silicone and saline. However, did you know that implants can also come in different shapes? Silicone implants come in two shapes: round and teardrop. It is widely believed that teardrop-shaped implants result in a more natural-looking outcome. However, this may not be the case.
A recent study has shown that even professionals like plastic surgeons and nurses did not notice a difference between the final outcome of similar patients who received these implants. During the study, 30 plastic surgeons and 30 plastic surgery nurses viewed before and after photos of 30 women who had undergone breast augmentation surgery with round or teardrop-shaped implants.
For each set of photos, the surgeons and nurses judged whether the surgery was done with round or teardrop implants. The goal of the study was to determine if a difference was noticeable in patients who used teardrop versus round silicone implants. Overall, there was a 50-50 chance that the surgeons and nurses would guess correctly.
This inability to tell the difference between the implant shapes is bringing up the question of whether teardrop implants are necessary at all. Not only do shaped implants cost more and carry more risk for complications, like rotation.
Overall, this study sheds some new light on the necessity for many different shaped implants. If you are interested in learning more about breast augmentation with implants, contact Berman Plastic Surgery & Spa today to schedule a consultation.
