What Do You Know About Sculptra®?

Sculptra® creates facial volume in the deep folds in the “smile lines” between the nose and mouth; the lines between your mouth and chin (called the marionette lines) and in the chin. When injected into the cheeks, a natural lift is created that eliminates or minimizes sagging jowls. Sculptra® is also used to treat what’s called temporal wasting, which is a lack of volume in the temples that happens with aging.
Sculptra® helps replace lost collagen. As we age, collagen (a building block of youthful skin) decreases, causing wrinkles in the skin. During the period in which you receive Sculptra® injections, the collagen is replaced. Therefore, rather than a filler, per se, Sculptra® is actually a “collagen rebuilder.”
What is Sculptra®?
Like Juvéderm® and Restylane®, Sculptra® is an injectable. Unlike Juvéderm® or Restylane®, however, Sculptra® creates facial volume over time, for a very natural improvement. It was given FDA approval in 2009.
What is Sculptra® Made Of?
Sculptra® is made of poly-L-lactic acid, a safe, synthetic material that is naturally absorbed by the body. It has been used for many years in dissolvable sutures.
Where Can Sculptra® Be Injected?
Sculptra® is exclusively used in the face. It can be injected in the nasolabial folds, marionette lines, temples, cheeks, and chin. It is injected in the same manner as other fillers, with a blunt tip cannula in our Boca Raton plastic surgery office. On average, most patients require three injections over a period of a few months. Results last at least two years for most patients and may last longer (the clinical study stopped at 25 months).
Are Sculptra® Injections Painful?
With the use of topical numbing cream and a blunt tip cannula, Sculptra® injections feel the same as any filler injection. You may have some slight skin swelling afterward, which can be lessened with ice packs. There is no recovery time needed with Sculptra® injections: you can go about your day immediately afterward.
