Restore a youthful appearance

As we grow older, more signs of aging become more evident on our faces in the form of wrinkles and folds. There are various injectable cosmetic fillers available to help improve upon one’s facial appearance and fill wrinkles to achieve a more youthful look. These fillers add volume and smooth out wrinkles. Collagen and fat are some of the more common fillers. Restylane is a form of injectable filler that provides advantages over fat and collagen injections.

What is Restylane?

Restylane is a non-animal, biodegradable gel based on hyaluronic acid. Hyaluronic acid is a substance found in most of our bodies as it provides volume and fullness to the skin. Restylane has been proven to last longer than fat and collagen injections. The hyaluronic acid filler maintains its shape using the body’s own moisture. What results is a longer-lasting, youthful facial appearance. The Restylane line offers a diverse range of products that can be used to either shape facial contours, smooth deep wrinkles and facial folds, or provide lip enhancement. What results from the dermal filler treatment is a healthy, more youthful, and fuller appearance in your treatment area. Restylane comes in several different formulas to treat different concerns.

Restylane

Restylane is used to correct severe facial wrinkles and folds in the lower face such as smile lines around the nose and mouth and vertical lip lines. Restylane can also be placed directly in the lips for a subtle enhancement.

Restylane Lyft

Volume loss not only causes fine lines and wrinkles, but noticeable changes in the face and hands that can make you look older due to flattened cheeks or visible tendons and veins. Restylane Lyft can be placed in the cheeks to restore volume loss and give a subtle, lifted appearance. When placed in the hands, youthful volume is restored for a smooth appearance.

Restylane Silk

With aging, many patients experience thinning lips due to volume loss. Restylane Silk is FDA-approved to enhance the appearance of the lips. With Restylane Silk, patients can achieve fuller, smoother, more symmetrical lips as well as correct moderate vertical lip lines.

Restylane Refyne & Defyne

Restylane Refyne and Defyne is a hyaluronic acid dermal filler made with the new XpresHAn Technology TM (trademark sign). This matrix moves with your face giving you a more natural look when you smile, pout, or pucker. It is approved for nasolabial folds ( lines from the nose to the corners of the mouth) and marionette lines (lines from the corners of the mouth towards the chin). For moderate concerns, Restylane Refyne can be used, while more severe folds can be treated with Restylane Defyne.

Who is a Candidate for Restylane?

Restylane fillers are approved for patients 21 and over. Candidates for Restylane are those who want to restore youthful volume to their face or backs of the hands, or those who want to subtly enhance the facial features like the cheeks or lips. Formulas can be combined and placed in several areas at once for optimal improvements. Our esthetician will meet with patients during a consultation to determine which filler formulas are right for their unique concerns. Those with severe skin allergies and those who are pregnant or breastfeeding may not be candidates for treatment with Restylane.

What to Expect During Treatment

Prior to treatment, the skin will be cleansed and prepped and the injection sites will be mapped out to ensure even distribution. The formula will then be placed below the skin to instantly smooth out wrinkles or add subtle volume. Patients report a slight pinch with each injection, however, those who are concerned about discomfort can opt for a topical anesthetic prior to treatment to maximize their comfort.

Recovery and Results

There is no required recovery or downtime after treatment with Restylane fillers. Patients can get right back to their regular routine, however, mild side effects like redness, swelling, bruising, and itching at the injection sites can be expected. These should fade fairly quickly. Patients should also avoid intense heat from hot water and avoid direct sun exposure in the days following treatment.

The results of Restylane fillers are instant and long-lasting. Depending on the formula and where it was placed, Restylane can last for 6-12 months before a touch-up session is needed.

Restylane FAQs

How long does a Restylane treatment session take?

A typical Restylane treatment session takes about 20–45 minutes, depending on the treatment areas and whether you are using a single hyaluronic acid filler or a range of fillers. During your appointment, we will evaluate your facial anatomy, discuss your goals, and determine which dermal filler is best suited for your needs.

Is there anything I should avoid before or after my Restylane injections?

Before your Restylane treatments, your provider will review your medical history, any medications you’re taking, and discuss potential risks, especially if you use blood-thinning medications or have bleeding disorders. To minimize bruising, you may be advised to avoid aspirin, ibuprofen, and certain supplements before your injections. After the procedure, patients should avoid strenuous exercise, direct sun exposure, and heat for 24–48 hours, as these can increase swelling.

When will I see results from Restylane, and how natural will they look?

You will notice results immediately after your Restylane contour filler is injected, as the hyaluronic acid gel adds volume and fullness right away. Over the next few days, the filler settles into place, creating soft, natural-looking results. Individual results vary by age, health, treatment area, and the specific formula used, but most patients enjoy a refreshed, more youthful appearance for several months.

Are Restylane fillers safe for sensitive skin or first-time filler patients?

Restylane fillers are considered safe for most patients, including those with sensitive skin or individuals experiencing their first dermal filler treatment. Developed with biocompatible hyaluronic acid HA, Restylane is designed to mimic substances already found in the skin, offering excellent safety and predictable outcomes.

Can Restylane be combined with other cosmetic treatments for enhanced results?

Restylane can absolutely be combined with other aesthetic procedures to enhance contour, fullness, and overall facial harmony. Many patients pair Restylane Defyne, Refyne, or Lyft with treatments like Botox, skin resurfacing, or laser therapy for more comprehensive rejuvenation. Combining treatments allows your provider to address wrinkles, restore cheek volume, and refine lip augmentation in a single, customized plan.

How does Restylane differ across facial areas like lips versus cheeks?

Different Restylane formulations vary in firmness and flexibility, allowing providers to select products that move naturally in dynamic areas like the lips while offering structure and lift in areas such as the cheeks or jawline.

Can Restylane be layered with other injectables during the same visit?

Restylane is often combined with neuromodulators or collagen-stimulating treatments as part of a comprehensive facial balancing plan.

Why does injector technique matter more than the amount of filler used?

Precise placement at the correct depth can enhance contour and support facial anatomy without overfilling, leading to more refined and natural-looking results.

Does Restylane integrate differently in thinner versus thicker skin?

Skin thickness, elasticity, and underlying structure influence how filler settles, which is why treatment is always customized rather than one-size-fits-all.

Can Restylane be adjusted after treatment if refinement is needed?

Because Restylane is hyaluronic acid–based, it can be carefully adjusted or dissolved if subtle refinements are desired once swelling resolves.

How long do Restylane results typically last?

The duration of Restylane results varies depending on which specific Restylane product is used, the treatment area, individual metabolism, and lifestyle factors. On average, Restylane results last between 6 and 18 months. Many patients choose to schedule touch-up treatments before the filler completely dissipates to maintain their results.

What is the difference between the various Restylane products?

The Restylane family comprises several formulations, each with specific properties to address different aesthetic concerns and facial areas. The key differences lie in the cross-linking technology and particle size of the hyaluronic acid gel; tighter cross-linking creates firmer products for structural support (like Lyft), while looser cross-linking allows for more flexibility and natural movement (like Refyne and Kysse).

Is there any downtime after Restylane injections?

Restylane injections are often called "lunchtime procedures" because they typically involve minimal downtime, though some temporary side effects are normal. Most patients can return to work and normal activities immediately after treatment, though you may want to avoid important social events for 24-48 hours to allow initial swelling and potential bruising to subside.

What are the common side effects of Restylane?

Restylane is generally well-tolerated, but, like any injectable treatment, it can cause common, expected side effects. The most frequent side effects include temporary swelling, redness, pain, bruising, and tenderness at the injection sites, which typically resolve within a few days to a week. These reactions are usually mild to moderate and are part of the normal healing process.

How much does Restylane cost per syringe or treatment area?

The cost of Restylane treatments varies based on the number of syringes required to achieve your desired results. On average, Restylane costs between $500 and $800 per syringe. Berman Plastic Surgery offers package pricing for multiple syringes or combination treatments, which can reduce costs.

Can Restylane be dissolved if I'm unhappy with the results?

Yes, one significant advantage of hyaluronic acid-based fillers like Restylane is that they can be dissolved with an enzyme called hyaluronidase if you're dissatisfied with your results or experience complications. This provides an important safety net and peace of mind for patients trying fillers for the first time or those concerned about potential asymmetry or overcorrection.

Will Restylane injections hurt, and is numbing available?

Most Restylane products contain lidocaine, a local anesthetic, which helps minimize discomfort during injection, and additional numbing options are available to enhance comfort. Many patients describe the sensation as a slight pinch, pressure, or stinging that lasts only a few seconds at each injection site. Pain tolerance varies significantly among individuals, and sensitivity can differ across treatment areas.

How do I know how many syringes of Restylane I'll need?

Determining the appropriate number of Restylane syringes requires a personalized assessment based on your specific concerns, anatomy, aesthetic goals, and budget. First-time patients often benefit from a conservative approach, starting with fewer syringes and adding more in a follow-up session if desired, rather than risking overfilling. Keep in mind that individual anatomy, tissue characteristics, and product absorption rates vary, so what works for one person may differ for another.

Can Restylane migrate from the injection site?

Restylane is formulated to stay where it's placed, and modern formulations use cross-linking technology that helps the gel maintain its position in the tissue. However, several factors can contribute to migration: using too much product, injecting too superficially, placing filler in areas with excessive movement, or massage and manipulation of the area too soon after treatment. To minimize migration risk, choose an experienced injector who understands facial anatomy and uses conservative amounts with proper placement techniques.

What is the minimum age requirement for Restylane treatments?

The FDA has approved Restylane products for use in patients 21 years of age and older. This age restriction is in place because facial development continues into the early twenties, and the FDA's clinical trials demonstrating safety and efficacy were conducted in adult populations. Most aesthetic professionals recommend that younger individuals focus on preventive measures like sun protection, good skincare, and healthy lifestyle habits before pursuing injectables.
