Smooth out fine lines in the upper face

With age and repeated facial movements, the skin can begin to weaken and reveal fine lines and wrinkles. A neuromodulator like Botox or Dysport can temporarily reduce wrinkle-causing muscle contractions so you can express yourself without the lines!

What are Botox and Dysport?

Botulinumtoxin, whose trade names are better known as BOTOX® & DYSPORT®, is a purified toxin produced by bacteria that causes weakening and temporarily relaxes muscles. It has been used for over 30 years in the treatment of muscular problems in the eyes with great success. Just recently, the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has granted approval to administer BOTOX® & DYSPORT® for the temporary improvement of facial expression lines in adult men and women. Dr. Berman likes to have multiple options for treating facial expression lines. During your consultation, he can recommend which injectable is right for you.

Why Boca Raton Patients Choose Dr. Berman for Botox

As a skilled plastic surgeon with expertise in dermatologic surgery and facial aesthetics, Dr. Berman carefully evaluates your facial muscles, skin condition, and aesthetic goals before recommending treatment. Dr. Berman focuses on precision and natural-looking outcomes. Each injection site is strategically selected to relax the associated muscles responsible for wrinkles while preserving natural facial expression. By carefully treating the forehead and other areas of the upper face, he can temporarily improve visible signs of aging, such as forehead and facial wrinkles.

Patient safety is always a top priority. Before treatment, Dr. Berman will review all your medical conditions, all the medicines you take to ensure that botulinum toxin type injections are appropriate for you. This consultation helps reduce the risk of complications and ensures the treatment is performed safely by an experienced healthcare provider.

Who is a Candidate for Botox and Dysport?

Candidates for a neuromodulator injectable like BOTOX or DYSPORT are those who experience fine lines and wrinkles caused or worsened by facial expressions. These typically occur in the upper face in the forehead, outer corners of the eyes, and between the brows. The formula that’s right for you will be determined during your consultation in Boca Raton.

Botox Treatment Areas

BOTOX® Cosmetic and Dysport are designed to treat wrinkles caused by repeated facial movement. By relaxing targeted facial muscles, these treatments can soften lines and help restore a smoother appearance. Common treatment areas include:

  • Forehead lines and forehead wrinkles caused by movement of the forehead muscles
  • Frown lines between the eyebrows, also known as severe glabellar lines
  • Crow’s feet lines around the outer corners of the eyes
  • Vertical neck bands, including the vertical bands connecting the neck muscles

Botulinum toxin products have many therapeutic indications beyond aesthetics as well. These medications are also used in adult patients and sometimes pediatric patients for conditions such as chronic migraine, episodic migraine, excessive sweating, cervical dystonia, upper limb spasticity, lower limb spasticity, pediatric lower limb spasticity, and muscle disorders related to cerebral palsy, increased muscle stiffness, or muscle stiffness. In other medical specialties, they may also be used to help with overactive bladder, urinary incontinence, and bladder control.

How is Botox and Dysport Treatment Performed?

Tiny amounts of BOTOX® or DYSPORT® are injected into each of 5 points between and above the eyebrow with a fine needle into the muscle that creates a wrinkle. Frown lines, the lines in between your eyebrows, crow feet, the lines around the eyes, and horizontal forehead lines, are the areas most commonly injected. As the muscle weakens, it relaxes, causing the wrinkles in the skin to gradually soften and often disappear.

The effects of BOTOX® or DYSPORT® usually last three to five months, at which time another injection is needed. After several treatments the effects of BOTOX® or DYSPORT® may begin to last longer, sometimes up to eight months. BOTOX® or DYSPORT® are the most popular cosmetic mini-treatments today.

This procedure can be done on a lunch break and only takes 10 to 20 minutes, and requires no recovery time. Overall, the vast majority of patients love this quick-fix therapy, and return for a Boca Raton BOTOX® or DYSPORT® boost as soon as the wrinkles begin to reappear!

Recovery and Results

Ask Plastic Surgeon Dr. Jonathan Ross Berman about precautions you should take after your treatment, and call our office right away if you have difficulty swallowing, speaking, or breathing. If this happens do not drive a car, operate heavy machinery, or do any other dangerous activities. Some people have reported slight headaches after treatments. A small bruise at the site of injection is the most common side effect. When BOTOX® or DYSPORT® is injected into the forehead, it can result in brow-muscle weakening causing a temporary lopsided appearance. This is extremely rare and usually goes away by itself.

To maintain your improvements, you should discuss a regular treatment schedule. As with any Botulinum toxin product, you should wait at least 90 days between treatments. The efficacy of BOTOX® or DYSPORT® has been established for up to 4 repeated treatments. The safety of BOTOX® and DYSPORT® has been studied in up to 12 repeated treatments.

Botox vs. Dysport: Which Is Right for You?

Both BOTOX® Cosmetic and Dysport are highly effective botulinum toxin products used to treat frown lines and other facial wrinkles. While they work in a similar way, there are slight differences that may influence which option is recommended for you.

One key difference is how the products spread once injected. Dysport tends to diffuse slightly more from the injection site, which can make it useful for treating larger areas. BOTOX®, on the other hand, tends to stay more localized, which can be beneficial when treating smaller, precise areas, like between the eyebrows. Regardless of the option chosen, results typically last three to five months and provide a noticeable temporary improvement in the appearance of wrinkles.

Dysport FAQs

Can dysport be used on forehead?

Dysport is perfect for reducing the appearance of wrinkles on the forehead. This injectable treatment works by temporarily relaxing the muscles that cause horizontal forehead lines and other dynamic wrinkles. By targeting these specific muscles, Dysport can smooth and soften the skin's appearance, providing a more youthful and refreshed look.

How quickly does Dysport work?

After receiving a Dysport injection, many people begin to see results as quickly as 2 to 3 days post-treatment. This fast-acting nature makes Dysport an attractive option for those seeking quick improvements.

Can I wear makeup after Dysport?

It's recommended to wait at least 4 to 6 hours post-injection before applying makeup to allow the product to settle properly and reduce the risk of irritation or infection. When applying makeup, use clean brushes or applicators and gentle, non-comedogenic products that won't clog pores or cause irritation. Additionally, avoid rubbing or massaging the treated area to prevent shifting the Dysport from its intended injection site.

How long after Dysport can I wash my face?

After receiving a Dysport injection, it is recommended to wait at least 4 to 6 hours before washing your face. This time frame helps ensure that the product settles into the muscle properly without being disturbed. When you do wash your face, use a gentle cleanser and lukewarm water, avoiding any vigorous rubbing or massaging of the treated area. Additionally, it's best to refrain from using any exfoliants or harsh skincare products immediately after the procedure to minimize any potential irritation.

How often should I get Dysport?

Generally, Dysport injections are administered every three to four months to maintain smoothness and relaxation in the treated areas. Regular treatments help maintain the desired aesthetic results, though some individuals might find they need injections more or less frequently based on their muscle activity and personal goals.

What are the side effects of Dysport?

As with any treatment or medication, Dysport does come with some side effects. Common side effects of Dysport include mild discomfort, swelling, or bruising at the injection site, as well as headaches, injection site irritation, and temporary facial weakness or drooping.

What should I avoid after Dysport?

After receiving a Dysport injection, it's essential to follow specific aftercare guidelines to ensure optimal results and minimize the risk of side effects. Firstly, avoid rubbing or massaging the treated area for at least 24 hours to prevent the spread of the formula to unintended areas. It's also advisable to steer clear of strenuous exercise, saunas, or hot tubs during this time, as increased blood flow might reduce the effectiveness of the treatment. Additionally, refrain from lying down or bending over for several hours post-injection to help the Dysport settle properly.

Can I shower after Dysport?

Yes, you can shower after receiving a Dysport treatment, but it is recommended to wait at least four to six hours before doing so. This waiting period allows the product to settle properly in the targeted areas. When you do shower, it is important to use lukewarm water and avoid applying high pressure or excessive rubbing to the treated areas. Hot showers should be avoided for at least 24 hours to minimize any potential side effects and ensure optimal results.

Can I sleep on my side after Dysport?

After receiving Dysport injections, it is generally recommended to avoid lying down flat or sleeping on your side for at least four to six hours. This precaution helps prevent the product from migrating to unintended areas, which could diminish the desired effects or lead to unintended side effects. For optimal results, it's best to plan your injections at a time when you can remain upright for a few hours post-treatment.

Does Botox last longer than Dysport?

While the effects of both Botox and Dysport are similar, their duration may vary slightly from person to person. Generally, Botox and Dysport results typically last about 3 to 4 months.
