How to Prepare for Breast Augmentation Surgery?

Breast augmentation is one of the most popular plastic surgery procedures done each year. Part of getting any surgical procedure is making sure that you are well-prepared. During a consultation with Dr. Berman, he will go over detailed instructions with you to prepare for breast augmentation surgery. By following the steps laid out we can ensure a safe, smooth surgery and recovery period.

Why Do I Need to Prepare?

Any type of surgery requires some preparation. The preparation steps help to reduce the risk of complications, and infection and speed up the healing process. We want to help you feel comfortable and prepared before undergoing your breast augmentation surgery. One of the first steps in preparing for breast augmentation is getting blood work done. This is to ensure that this surgery is safe for you to endure. Then you will have other steps to follow per week in order to be fully prepared.

Two Weeks Before Surgery

The preparation for breast augmentation starts two weeks before. This is to help make sure that all necessary arrangements are made. You should arrange for someone to drive you home on the day of your surgery, someone to stay with you for the first 24 hours post-op, childcare, and pet care. All of these arrangements should be made to make sure that you are able to rest and recover. Other things to keep in mind are:

  • Do not drink alcohol
  • Do not smoke
  • Do not take aspirin or ibuprofen
  • Do not take herbal supplements

All of these things could cause complications during surgery and obstruct your recovery period.

One Week Before Surgery

As the day of your surgery approaches, there are a few items that you are going to want to have on hand for your recovery period. Some of these are:

  • Laxative or stool softener
  • Pick-up tool (so you don’t have to bend over)
  • Comfortable pajamas
  • Shirts that button in the front
  • Prepared meals

It is a good idea to have these items on hand in order to make your recovery period easier.

Night Before Surgery

The night before your surgery is crucial to being prepared for your breast augmentation. There are a few things that should be done at this point.

  • Wash your hair
  • Cleanse your body with your usual soap
  • Do not eat or drink anything eight hours before your surgery

If you have food or drinks (including water) before your surgery, then it will have to be canceled and rescheduled.

Day of Surgery

For the day of your surgery, it is important to wear loose, comfortable clothing. Please do not wear any underarm deodorant or fragrances. Please take off all piercings. Shirts that can zip or button up are preferred so that they can easily be put back on. Also, don’t wear any jewelry, makeup, or contact lenses. Dr. Berman will provide you with a list of detailed instructions and recommendations for the day of your surgery. A friend or loved one should be present to drive you home from the hospital once you are cleared to go.

Getting a breast augmentation is an exciting time and shouldn’t be stressful. By following specific preparation steps, the stress of surgery will be lessened, and you will feel more comfortable knowing that you are prepared. If you have any questions, feel free to contact our office.
